It’s Me Again®
A Tummy Tuck, technically referred to as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure to remove excess or loose skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen in men and women and can tighten muscles that have separated or weakened.
The procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen and may improve the appearance of stretch marks, especially those located below the navel. However, removal of this excess skin will produce scarring, which with a full Tummy Tuck can extend from hip to hip.
Generally, a horizontal incision is placed just within or above the pubic area, though there are some variations both to the location of incisions and the technique itself, and usually extends laterally toward the pelvic bones, depending largely on the amount of skin to be removed. The contour of the incision will vary somewhat according to the structure of your abdomen, the style of bathing suit or undergarments you prefer and the location of skin to be removed. Dr. Ruthie will take you through these options to determine which technique would be most appropriate for you.
Is Abdominoplasty Right for You?
Women and men alike select abdominoplasty to help flatten their stomachs to feel more confident in their clothes, but it’s important to have realistic expectations about what the procedure can do for you.
Abdominoplasty may be an option for you if:
- you have excess or sagging abdominal skin
- your abdomen protrudes and is out of proportion to the rest of your body
- your abdominal muscles have been separated and/or weakened
- excess fatty tissue is concentrated in your abdomen area
Patients who intend to lose a lot of weight may benefit from postponing the surgery, and women who plan future pregnancies should wait, as vertical muscles in the abdomen that are tightened during surgery could separate again. Loss of skin elasticity in older patients, which frequently occurs with slight obesity, also can be improved. Scarring from previous abdominal surgery may limit the results of your Tummy Tuck. Dr. Ruthie will help you make the final decision on whether abdominoplasty is right for you; however, the best candidates are in relatively good shape and psychologically healthy with realistic expectations but are bothered by a large fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that won’t respond to diet or exercise.
Your Visit with Dr. Ruthie
During your consultation, Dr. Ruthie will examine your abdomen, while you are standing and lying down, and assess your skin tone and the degree of loose skin in the abdominal region, as well as the amount of excess fat in your abdomen and the condition of your abdominal muscles. She will discuss your expectations and determine whether your goals can realistically be achieved.
You should come to the consultation prepared to discuss your medical history, including information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, previous surgeries and any medications you currently take. If you plan to become pregnant or lose weight in the future, you should discuss this with Dr. Ruthie.
